St Ives to Bodinnick 23/7/13 to 24/7/13

We spent a very pleasant day in St Ives and south west Cornwall. They have an all day open top double decker bus service that travels through many of the villages in the area. The tide was well out when we walked down the hill from our hotel to catch the bus. We passed a very talented window cleaner who was washing the very top windows of the many hotels and b&bs in St Ives.

We hopped on at 11.00 and went first to Marizion where we saw St Michael's Mount. The tide was out so we could have walked across on the causeway if we had chosen too, but it's a very steep climb.

From Marazion we drove to Penzance, another pretty Cornish town but we didn't spot any pirates.

The bus then headed off through several other small villages like Newlyn, Lamorna and Treen. We drove on until we came to the village of Porthcurno where the Telegraph Museum is housed.

When we arrived in Porthcurno there was a massive road block. A tourist coach had hit the pub and broken several of its windows. The road was very narrow and nothing could get past in either direction. The tourists from the broken bus were waiting for a replacement bus to arrive and their broken bus to be moved into the car park. All very exciting! After about 30 mins they managed to get the traffic moving again.

Our bus was then running quite late, as were several other buses. We headed off to Lands End.

After collecting the passengers who had been waiting for some time, the bus then travelled through some more coastal villages finally getting back to St Ives at around 4.00. It was a great way to see the area.

When we got back, the tide was in. All the boats were now floating rather than sitting on the sand. It had also started to rain. What a shame.

On Wednesday we had to leave St Ives for Bodinnick. We went down to the pier and watched the seagulls stealing fish from the fishing boats. It's not only sandwiches they fancy!

We then drove to Bodinnick which is a tiny village on the steepest hill leading onto the Ricer Fowey. From our window we can see up and down the river, watch the little ferry and check out the village of Fowey on the opposite bank. Fowey is much bigger than Bodinnick. We will explore more today (Thursday).......
